چکیده

Unstable concentration gradients inherent in traveling chemical waves can give rise to buoyancy-driven convection, altering the speed of the wave. When an excitable Belousov– Zhabotinsky reaction system is confined within a sufficiently narrow, vertical two-dimensional channel, convection arises at a symmetry-breaking bifurcation point. The observed linear rate of change of wave speed with the bifurcation parameter is a necessary consequence of the Z2 symmetry present. © 1998 American Institute of Physics. @S1070-6631~98!00303-1#

The effect of confinement on thermal frontal polymerization†

In thermal frontal polymerization, the interplay between heat diffusion and Arrhenius type reaction kinetics gives rise to a propagating reactive front that is effectively sustained through a system positive feedback mechanism. We seek to understand how spatial confinement affects the system dynamics and overall polymerization kinetics. We find that with increasing confinement of the system, th...

Stability of convective patterns in reaction fronts: a comparison of three models.

Autocatalytic reaction fronts generate density gradients that may lead to convection. Fronts propagating in vertical tubes can be flat, axisymmetric, or nonaxisymmetric, depending on the diameter of the tube. In this paper, we study the transitions to convection as well as the stability of different types of fronts. We analyze the stability of the convective reaction fronts using three differen...

A Study on free convective heat and mass transfer flow through a highly porous medium with radiation, chemical reaction and Soret effects

The paper addresses the effects of Soret on unsteady free convection flow of a viscous incompressible fluid through a porous medium with high porosity bounded by a vertical infinite moving plate under the influence of thermal radiation, chemical reaction, and heat source. The fluid is considered to be gray, absorbing, and emitting but non-scattering medium, and Rosseland approximation is consid...

Effects of constant electric fields on the buoyant stability of reaction fronts.

The effects that applying constant electric fields have on the buoyant instability of reaction fronts propagating vertically in a Hele-Shaw cell are investigated for a range of electric field strengths and fluid parameters. The reaction produces a decrease in density across the front such that upwards propagating fronts are buoyantly unstable in the field-free situation. The reaction kinetics a...

Soret and chemical reaction effects on a three-dimensional MHD convective flow of dissipative fluid along an infinite vertical porous plate

An analytical study was performed to study effects of thermo-diffusion and chemical reactions on a three-dimensional MHD mixed convective flow of dissipative fluid along an infinite vertical porous plate with transverse sinusoidal suction velocity. The parabolic partial differential equations governing the fluid flow, heat transfer, and mass transfer were solved using perturbation technique and...
